The Jawoyn Association has signed a historic agreement with Federal, Northern Territory and local governments to boost local community projects, business opportunities, and employment and training in the wider Katherine region.

The multi-agency partnership was signed today by the Federal Government’s Max Saxby, Northern Territory Chief Minister Michael Gunner, Jawoyn chair Lisa Mumbin and Roper Shire Gulf’s Sharon Hillen at Nitmiluk National Park.

The agreement has been forged in a move to strengthen existing relationships, align community and government priorities, and better facilitate social and economic opportunities.

Jawoyn Association chair Lisa Mumbin says the agreement is a positive move for all partners.

“Jawoyn are always looking at ways our knowledge, our resources and people can help make the Jawoyn community, the Northern Territory and our nation stronger – and this partnership is an important opportunity to do this.

“It is also important recognition of Jawoyn’s work and our potential.

“The Jawoyn Association contributes to the economy through tourism, land management and support services – but we have a lot more to offer.

Through the partnership, Jawoyn will help drive the development of local strategies and assume greater control and input into decisions that impact Jawoyn and broader communities.

“The multi-agency partnership cements our collaboration across all levels of government – local, territory and national – and represents new ways to work together to achieve common goals and to learn more from each other,” Ms Mumbin said.

“It ensures Jawoyn continue to have a strong voice and strong role in decision making for the future of our people and the wider community.

“The agreement is another step forward, for Jawoyn and for all governments.”
