The Jawoyn Association welcomes the Northern Territory Government’s pledge to negotiate a treaty with Aboriginal people.

Today the Chief Minister Michael Gunner signed a historic agreement with the Northern Territory’s four land councils – the Central Land Council, Northern Land Council, Tiwi Land Council and Anindilyakwa Land Council – to negotiate a treaty.

Under the terms of the memorandum of understanding, which has been labelled the Barunga Agreement, an independent Treaty Commissioner will be appointed to lead the consultations with Aboriginal people and organisations and develop a framework for Treaty negotiations.
