Today we celebrate 50 years since more than 90 per cent of Australians voted “yes” to change the constitution and give more rights to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

It was the highest response ever recorded in Federal referendum.

The change saw two discriminatory references removed from the nation’s guiding document and ensured Aboriginal people were included in the census and the Commonwealth was able to create laws for Indigenous groups.

To mark the occasion, the Northern Territory government commissioned a series of advertisements and some Jawoyn representatives stories and thoughts were featured – including CEO John Berto, chairperson Lisa Mumbin and former CEO Jack Ah Kit.
